Enter three numbers to find out exactly what score you need on your final exam: your current class grade (as a percentage), how much the final exam is worth (its weight), and the minimum grade you want to finish with. Click "Calculate" and we'll tell you the exact score you need — plus whether it's realistic.
This calculator uses a weighted average formula. Your final grade is a combination of two parts: the work you've already done (weighted by its percentage of the total grade) and your final exam score (weighted by the exam's percentage). The formula is: Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) ÷ Exam Weight. Our calculator does this math instantly so you don't have to.
If the calculator shows you need more than 100% on your final, it means that grade is mathematically impossible without extra credit. In that case, try lowering your target grade — you might be surprised that a B+ or B is still within reach. You should also talk to your teacher about extra credit opportunities, grade curves, or the possibility of redoing past assignments.
Check your class syllabus — it's usually listed under "Grading" or "Grade Breakdown." Common final exam weights are 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, or 40%. If you can't find your syllabus, check your school's learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom) or simply ask your teacher.
Start studying at least 3-5 days before your exam, not the night before. Use active recall — close your notes and test yourself instead of re-reading. Focus on the most recent material, since finals tend to emphasize later chapters. Practice with old exams or practice problems if available. And get 7-8 hours of sleep the night before — cramming all night actually hurts your performance more than it helps.
Does this work for college and high school? Yes. The formula is the same regardless of your school level.
What if my class uses total points instead of percentages? Convert your points to a percentage first: divide earned points by total possible points and multiply by 100.
Can I use this for midterms too? Absolutely. Just enter the midterm's weight instead of the final's weight.
Is this calculator free? Yes, always. GradeChimp is free for every student with no signups or hidden fees.
